How TechGeeks evaluates gear
Good gear should make a network or system easier to operate, not just look better in a cart. Before buying, confirm the model, region, power supply, seller, warranty, firmware support, licensing, and compatibility with your design.
Fit the environment
Home lab, small office, ISP edge, and media-server builds have different requirements. Overspending can be as wasteful as underbuying.
Support visibility
Prefer gear that gives you VLANs, logs, metrics, backups, firmware control, and clean recovery options.
Buy for the weak points
Power, cooling, cabling, backups, and storage planning often matter more than chasing the largest spec number.
Quick chooser by scenario
Home or small office network
Start with a gateway that supports VLANs and firewall policy, add a managed PoE switch if you have APs or cameras, then place access points based on coverage instead of wishful thinking.
Multi-site / SD-WAN
For UniFi Site Magic, choose the hub by tunnel capacity, WAN resilience, inspection load, and future growth. Choose spokes by reliability and supportability.
Linux homelab
Build around a reliable compute host, managed switching, clear VLANs, storage that can be backed up, and a UPS before adding more services.
Plex / media server
Prioritize storage layout, backup paths, local SSD cache, and hardware transcoding support before buying extra drives or GPUs.
PisoWiFi deployment
Plan backhaul, outdoor coverage, customer isolation, voucher workflow, safe mounting, weather protection, and power backup before selling access.
Security and operations
Start with account protection, MFA, backups, DNS filtering, logging, and secure admin access. Tools should support an operating process, not replace one.
Networking gear
UniFi gateways
Useful for home labs, small offices, and UniFi-to-UniFi Site Magic designs. Use official UniFi tech specs and the SD-WAN guide before buying for tunnel count or feature support.
Switching, Wi-Fi, and physical layer
Managed switching, PoE budgeting, AP placement, patch labeling, and UPS power make the network easier to support. Do not let Wi-Fi be the only design decision.
Small ISP / PisoWiFi edge
MikroTik and UniFi-class gear can both make sense depending on budget, support skill, backhaul, coverage, and portal workflow. Keep management access private and document the build.
Linux, homelab, and media-server gear
Mini PCs and compute hosts
For many labs, a modern Intel mini PC is a better first compute host than an old power-hungry server. Confirm NIC count, RAM expansion, storage slots, virtualization support, and cooling.
NAS, drives, and backup storage
Separate final media, application data, download staging, transcode cache, and backups. NAS drives are not a backup by themselves; plan a restore path.
Plex and Tdarr acceleration
Plex hardware acceleration requires the right platform and, for many use cases, Plex Pass. Intel Quick Sync and supported NVIDIA options are common paths, but direct play and storage design still matter.
Security and operations toolkit
Account protection
Hardware security keys, a password manager, and MFA recovery planning are usually higher impact than buying another firewall.
Field tools
Cable testers, label makers, spare patch cables, console cables, and a clean note-taking workflow make troubleshooting faster.
AI workflow toolkit
AI tools should help write, review, summarize, and automate work without leaking sensitive customer details. Start with process and redaction before buying hardware.
Buying mistakes to avoid: unmanaged switches where VLANs are required, no UPS on important gear, storage with no backup, consumer mesh where managed APs are needed, routers that cannot handle expected inspection or VPN load, public admin interfaces, and purchases made from stale product listings without verifying the exact model.
